before the winter solstice

Snows before the winter solstice...

The light was settling behind the hills
another 2 weeks before the solstice
and already heavy snows had fallen
dripping from the trees like icing
and a cold wind that wound it's way -
from the fields into the wooded crests
softly crept the moving herds
browsing nimbly in the fields
shifting in nervous tracks
alert senses to the shifts in the air.

We just got a fresh 5 inches of snow in the past day or so. One of my drives to the library always provides good wildlife. There was actually 2 does and a red-tailed hawk up in the tree in this particular area. The herds were out moving/feeding as it was twilight, and I always get someone behind me that never lets me properly catch what I see.
